Guesthouse Zakaria, in Hvar

Long ago, one of our guest said to my mom, ” Hvar is the place from where God surely started to create the world”. Can I deny it? No, I cannot.

Well, I actually love to travel and see all the other beautiful places, but I cannot do always as I wish. So it happens that I stay here and meet the world, as all people come here for a visit.

We all feel joy to see nice things and places. Some of it some day might become my or your  homeland. What is a Homeland? It possibly is a place our heart loves to be.

For the Creator of all of the World, happiness might possibly be, to see us World-travelers enjoying and appreciating it.

If I did come to the point, well than I can now proudly show bit of this beauty, by posting some nice picture of Hvar. See and think twice, if you can beat me!

En nuestra casa , hablamos espanol. .. Os damos la bienvenida a nuestra posada con vista al fuerte Espanol. I y eso solo es posible en Hvar! I si Senor!

Ofrecemos alojamiento en una casa rustica sin lujos pero con todas las facilidades includo en la cocina, asi como una amplia terraza.

You will find here in Hvar quite well organized entertainment and all  sorts of water sports, like boat excursion, kayaking, diving, sailing,…

Who likes specifically to dive for wracks, goes south by boat to Vis, which is the best ground for diving fans.

Windsurfing is well organized in Bol  ( on island Brac) also reached by a short boat trip here from Hvar to the north.

Hvar is placed in between those neighboring island  – so Hvar is indeed the center of the happenings-

British, Irish and also Australian who live in London,  find various spots to enjoy here in Hvar. I feel they are better informed than some of us native … they know already the names of  beach clubs and disco night clubs. For a while Hvar becomes their hot spot… almost as if London has moved here. Hvar is small, so imagine Piccadilly placed on our small main square , how full does it get. If you cannot imagine , come and see it yourself- maybe you meet some of your friends right here, it is very likely. Can Hvar be a spot everyone finds what he expects ? Well, as soon someone projects own expectation, he easily can get disappointed.  Hvar does have its own reality- it is normally a sleepy small Mediterranean city, looking after peace, but enjoys short summer excitement, accepts than loud music and loves to see so many new faces – not only from London, but from everywhere- and than likes to sleep again till next summer.

Hvar and the backpackers used not to feet together. This was true for the last decades, when Hvar was fool of the tourists who stayed for 2, 3, or more weeks – mostly families.  What exactly has changed since than in Hvar? -Or maybe in the world?

Now we have 2 groups – The Backpackers and the long term guests, both having their preferences in different attractions in Hvar. Are the backpackers now the winner? One thing is to be observed: young people bring young spirit, so Hvar seems to get younger.

Can the backpackers feel welcomed in Hvar? Yes, I think so.  Yet, the backpackers time might be counted,  if in Hvar the expected elite occupies the ground. Hvar has its potential to become a destination like Nice, St. Tropez, Monaco or other top destinations on Mediterranean,  following the foot steps of Dubrovnik.

Hopefully the balance lasts longer and the backpackers can still enjoy, for them, newly discovered Hvar.  Native people are observing the shifting of these 2 groups and are making their preferences, so soon or later we will know if the backpack here in Hvar will be only a nice memory.

Hvar is very fortunate to be located very near to other islands like Brac, Korcula and Vis. From here the excursion boats go for day out to all of these beautiful places. Among these I would mostly recommend the tour to island of Vis. The boats are well organized going day in and out for the most targeted touristic destinations of this part of Dalmatia. To most of them  it is a trip of about an hour and half. Not only the visited places are astonishing, but the trip it selves is a pleasure- unless you get easy sea sick or bored- so, expect the natural elements not always behave as planed.

Wherever you book your accommodation, read well the instructions,  print the direction or store it on your cell phone – in Hvar you will definitely need it! Hvar town has a lot of small streets (alleys ) with no names in pedestrian area.  To find the location you are looking for and not get lost, city map might help you , but limited. Google map is good, but Hvar streets are not fully scanned.

You really have to relay on written direction provided by the owner of a vacation rental.

Venice and its benevolent dominion, has shaped Hvar`s culture and daily life for centuries. There is living proof in the beautiful architecture, especially in the oldest part of the town, below the Spanish Fort.                                                                 Before Venice, the Roman empire has for a long time influenced the Dalmatia and island of Hvar, but to come to the first settlement, we cannot avoid to mention ancient Greece, which actually gave the name to our island. Hvar – originally Faros (light house) and Stari Grad (means: old city) are the main cities of the island just 15 minutes car ride apart, both considered to be among the oldest cities in Croatia.

In Croatia you will find fabulous nautical destinations – thousands of beautiful islands.

Yes, Hvar is one of the most beautiful and having a hostel  I am supposed to advertise mostly our  place!

But I cannot think that way- you want to see more than one place. So what can I recommend?

Take a chance and rent one of the sailing boats  and travel along the coast. It will blow your senses seeing various places on your way, like : Brac, Solta, Vis, Korcula, Mljet, Lastovo and so on.

Believe me, you easily can become addicted to it.

Hi to all,

the response I got after I started to blog makes me think what ideas have I awoken in others … maybe not intended… but any way, it is grate to hear peoples feedback.

At the moment, I see the intention of the blog – to write about  local issues of interest … means- bringing Hvar to you.

Can it be more than this? Hvar is a tourist destination and all its magic lasts a short time … in summer the miracle of beauty pops up,  then comes the autumn and the magic is gone with the first rain.

writing about Hvar is one thing, experiencing it your self is another thing – I might tell you this or that, but it is your presence that counts.
